The election of a new chief in the Tsuu T’ina nation is rehashing an old controversy involving a proposed southwest ring road.
In 2009, the Tsuu T’ina nation opposed the construction of a southwest ring road through their reserve.
The issue has re-ignited since Mayor Naheed Nenshi was elected, but talks have gone nowhere.
Transportation Minister Ric McIver is hoping a new face might further new plans.
McIver says he’s hoping the debate may go differently this time.
“We’ll be as cooperative with him as we can, and when it fits into his schedule, I look forward to having further discussions with him.”
Roy Whitney was chief for 16 years before leaving office in 2001.
McIver says he’s giving him a chance to get settled back in before restarting talks.
