Councillor audit costs city nearly $64K

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Tens of thousands of dollars was spent on a forensic audit following Calgary councillor Joe Magliocca’s expense scandal where he improperly billed taxpayers for meals and alcohol during trips.

The city spent almost $64,000 with the audit finding Magliocca clearing disregarded the rules.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi sent Magliocca a letter of reprimand and says there has still not been any response.

“I have heard literally one word from him since this happened and that one word was, he came back to council and voted yes on something,” said Nenshi.

“That’s it. I hope he’s working really hard on that letter of apology.”

Nenshi said they haven’t discussed Magliocca possibly repaying the cost of the audit, but adds that money never would have been spent had the councillor just followed the rules in the first place.

Magliocca improperly billed thousands of dollars to the city, and claimed they were from meetings he held with other government officials. Reporting from Postmedia revealed that many of the people Magliocca claimed to meet had not had meals or drinks with the councillor.
