COVID-related deaths surge in Alberta as hospitalizations continue climb

Twenty four deaths were reported Wednesday, as the province finally pivots to take action with new restrictions.

CALGARY — COVID-related deaths continue to rise in Alberta, as the province reported 24 more people have died from the virus.

Wednesday’s update comes close to the record number of deaths recorded, which was 31 on Jan. 8.

The province also reported 1,609 new cases of COVID-19 since Tuesday.

The new infections come after nearly 16,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 10.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, there are now 18,421 active cases of the virus in Alberta.

There are now 877 people in hospital, a staggering 55 person increase from Tuesday, while 218 people are now in the ICU.

Of those currently in the ICU with COVID-19, 194 are unvaccinated.

To date, more than 5.67 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta.

Of the eligible population, 79.5 per cent have received one dose, while 71.4 per cent are now fully vaccinated.

Wednesday’s COVID numbers update comes just hours ahead of Premier Jason Kenney, Health Minister Tyler Shandro, and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw holding a live update on COVID-19.
