A man in his 40s is dead after an SUV hit an overpass pillar on Stoney Trail in Calgary Thursday afternoon.
Police believe the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Spruce Meadows Trail when it left the roadway and went into the centre median before hitting the bridge support.
The incident happened over the noon hour, resulting in the closure of the highway, also known as Highway 22-X, in both directions west of Spruce Meadows Way SW.
It has since reopened.

According to the fire department, the vehicle “burst into flames” after hitting the overpass.
“Multiple callers called 911. However, when fire crews arrived on scene, the vehicle was fully involved,” said Carol Henke with Calgary Fire.
“It is a very tragic accident and police are now in charge of the scene. I’m sure they would be looking for any dashcam footage that people have that were in the area or any witnesses that saw anything.”
The Calgary Police Service tells CityNews it received word of the single-vehicle crash around 12:30 p.m.
During the Stoney Trail closure, drivers were being asked to avoid several roads as investigators combed the scene.
The cause of the crash has not been released.
At this time, police do not believe excessive speed or impairment were factors.
Anyone with information or dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
