Calgary Humane Society: Leave pets at home in hot weather

Fido might want to go tag along with you, but it’s best to leave your fluffy friend at home in the hot weather.

Even if it’s just for a walk, if it’s too hot for your bare feet on the sidewalk, it’s too hot for theirs.

The Calgary Humane Society is reminding pet owners that their animals are safer at home in weather like this.

Sally Johnston with the society says any amount of time in a car with no air conditioning is too long.

“When temperatures start to crawl up, animals can suffer and have very serious medical ramifications, even with short instances in a car without air conditioning,” she explained. “So please let leave your pets at home, even if you’re going on a short trip to the grocery store — please just leave them at home where they’re comfortable.”

And, even if you’re headed to a patio, she says that can also easily be too much.

“Everyone knows their pet best and what they’re most comfortable with,” she said. “But, tending to things like their body language — if they’re panting excessively, if they are hot to the touch, if they are crawling to find any level of shade — it’s probably too hot for them and they are ready to go home.”

Johnston suggest drawing the blinds, keeping the house as cool as possible, and making sure your pets have lots of water when leaving them to hang out at home.
