At least five people are hurt in a multi-vehicle crash that briefly shut down a major road in southwest Calgary on Wednesday morning.
The collision happened around 11:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of 14 Street SW at Heritage Drive.
Calgary police say it involved a vehicle using a stolen plate and three other vehicles.
The incident began when officers tried to pull over a white pickup truck with stolen plates in the Bowness area. Police say the vehicle did not stop and proceeded through a red light at high speed.
CPS Staff Sgt. Mike Anderson says officers did not pursue and a short time later HAWCS helicopter spotted the vehicle heading south on Crowchild Trail. Police tracked the truck to 14 Street SW where it allegedly ran a red light at Heritage and hit three other vehicles.
The driver of the white pickup was taken into custody by officers.
Five people were injured and taken to hospital, including the driver. Police say no one sustained serious injuries.
“Unfortunately, it was 20 minutes between the time we tried to stop this vehicle and the collision,” says Anderson. “He obviously continued a driving in a manner that put the public at risk.”
“Thankfully, people weren’t seriously hurt. We got very lucky.”
Northbound 14 Street was briefly closed at Heritage, but the roads have since reopened.
