Large fire destroys under construction duplex in SE Calgary

Calgary fire department says two people are in hospital after a fire tore through a two-storey complex still under construction in the city's southeast Monday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded to a large residential fire that destroyed an under construction duplex in southeast Calgary on Monday afternoon.

The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says the fire broke out around 4:40 p.m. on 11 Avenue SE, just east of Barlow Trail.

Early images from the scene showed flames and heavy smoke rising above the neighbourhood, visible from Deerfoot Trail, where slowing traffic caused delays.

CFD has since confirmed the fire is out. No one was at the construction site at the time.

Two neighbouring residents were taken to hospital, one for minor smoke inhalation and another for a minor burn to the arm.

Officials expect the damaged building will need to be demolished.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
