Young buckaroos take over Stampede grounds for BMO Kids’ Day

There will be lots of horsing around and barrels of laughs for rodeo rugrats at the Calgary Stampede Wednesday.

Thousands of young ones and their families invaded the grounds for BMO Kids’ Day.

Kids aged 12 and under enjoyed free park admission before 9 a.m., along with a pancake breakfast.

It was the first kid’s day for Jenny and her brood.

She’s now a fan.

“We took the bus down, we didn’t have to wait in line to get in, we didn’t have to really wait in line for breakfast either,” she said. “We are actually aiming to come to the Stampede and not spend one penny. That’s our plan, we’re just going to cruise around and see all the stuff they have.”

Anna Joyce had the whole morning planned out for her sons, David and Michael.

“I think the (free admission) was great. When you have kids it makes it more affordable,” she said. “The rides are great and I love to go down to see the horses down at the accenture, and all the reptiles and all the free shows they have on for the kids. It’s a great day out.”

A local blogger offered some kid-friendly tips to make a boot-stompin’ trip to the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth as easy and efficient as possible.

“You have to know where the bathroom is and you might want to know where the food is,” author and blogger Leanne Shirtliffe said. “Print out a map from the Stampede website at home and go prepared.”

She told City’s Breakfast Television; don’t forget a hat and sunscreen.

“You know maybe a hail-proof umbrella might be a good idea at Stampede,” she said.

Later on in the day, there will be a kids’ Pow Wow parade at the PennWest Indian Village at 2 p.m., followed by a Youth Pow Wow at 3 p.m.
