With a successful exhibition showing now in the books, Calgary’s Foothills WFC has their sights set on 2016.
Head coach Troye Flannery said he’s pleased with the team’s performance — which included wins over the Seattle Sounders and Edmonton Green and Gold — and believes it has set them up well for their inaugural W-League season next summer.
“I think on the field, the results spoke for themselves,” he told 660 News of the group’s winning record.
“Obviously the highlight was the win against Seattle. I think beyond the on-field stuff, people can see and measure the off-field commitment to training with respect to the group of players we selected. They were fantastic. We had no commitment issues this summer. I can’t say that I’m surprised, but I’m pretty happy with it, especially considering it was an exhibition season.”
The squad was captained by Yvonne Northover. Flannery said she was one of the group’s standout performers and took her leadership role seriously.
“[Yvonne] was exceptional all summer long,” he said. “Breanne Vernon, who literally played on one leg and I’m not sure if she was medically cleared to play against Seattle. She was the best player on the field that particular night for both teams. They are two that stand out for sure. Our goalkeeping was fantastic. We used several and they were all very good.”
The team also featured Sarah Kinzner, who is currently part of the national program and recently wore the Maple Leaf at the Pan American Games in Toronto.
The coaching staff and management are already working hard, making plans for next season. They’ll reconvene with the players this fall and hope to hold open tryouts in early 2016.
