Local artist goes ape for gorillas at Calgary Zoo

All eyes were on Canadian pop sensation Kiesza on Friday, as she made a stop at the Calgary Zoo and tried to bring awareness to cell phone recycling.

It’s all in a bid to save gorillas.

Students from Centennial High School were also in attendance, and forked over their old cell phones to the pop star.

The singer says even the smallest action can help save animals’ lives.

“You feel like these endangered species can’t actually be helped, but in actuality, they can,” she said. “If everybody makes that small effort, it can make a huge difference.”

Cell phones are made with a mineral called coltan, which is used to coat electronic components in the devices. Recycling them helps preserve gorilla habitats, and keep chemicals from leaking into landfills and groundwater.

Centennial students seemed impressed, and many said that having such a huge celebrity supporting the cause would help bring more awareness.

Biology teacher Minaz Janmohamed said this was a great opportunity for his students.

“I think we were super excited about having this opportunity,” he said. “To actually see Canadian talent around and promoting things like that, I think it’s great.”

Recycling bins have been set up at the zoo’s rain forest exhibit.
