More e-scooters fly into Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Another electronic scooter company has come into Calgary meaning competition for American company, Lime.

Bird Canada has finally flown into Calgary, launching 300 scooters Monday as it prepares for 500 to hit city streets by the end of the week.

Calgary is the first Canadian city to use Bird and CEO Stewart Lyons says it’s because Alberta’s biggest city was ready and willing.

“Calgary was first out of the gate,” he explained. “And the province moved very quickly to allow us to do this because there is a Highway Traffic Act exemption that is required to use scooters on city streets.”

Lyons says that e-scooters have already proved successful in many European and American cities.

Bird’s devices work the same as Lime, with an app that shows you where an available scooter is. Workers will collect and charge them after they’ve been used.

As for the competition with Lime, Lyons says he’s excited for the challenge adding that Bird being a Canadian company gives them an advantage.

Bird is funded and run by Canadians.
