Alberta’s Maschmeyer pumped for this month’s women’s worlds in Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Over her career, Emerance Maschmeyer has suited up in four IIHF Women’s World Championships, but when she soon marks her fifth tournament, she’ll be doing it at home.
“I honestly never thought I would ever get to play a world championships in my home province,” Maschmeyer, the only Albertan on the roster, recently explained. “I’m super excited. I just can’t wait. I’m ready to play.”

She hails from Bruderheim, located northeast of Edmonton.
“Not many people know about Bruderheim,” she said with a laugh. “Population, I think, is 1,100. I grew up on a farm just outside of Bruderheim with my four siblings and my parents.
“It’s a huge hockey community. We have a rink in the town actually named my grandmother. And right beside the rink, there’s an outdoor rink. That shows how much of hockey town it is — the thing to do growing up there.”

For the 26-year-old and the rest of the Canadian squad, this tournament is a long time coming. The worlds were initially supposed to be held in Nova Scotia earlier this year, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns from local governments.
Calgary was able to pick up the pieces to bring the event to our city for the first time.
“We haven’t competed for a year and a half now,” she offered. “We are ready, and I’m so excited.”

Canada opens its tournament on Aug. 20 versus Finland at WinSport in Canada Olympic Park.
