Alberta still has the cheapest gas in Canada, fuel prices drop slightly nationally

Alberta was still the province where you buy the cheapest litre of regular gas in Canada on Friday according to GasBuddy.com, coming in at $1.69 on average.

Calgary’s average fuel price was around $1.71 and Edmonton’s was around $1.68.

The average price of gas across the country took a slight dip Friday from about $2 to $1.99 for a litre of regular, making it the first day since the national average price went below the all-time record of $2, set on Tuesday.

Although fuel prices slightly dropped just before the May long weekend, it’s still expected to be a pricey summer at the pumps.

Gasoline prices have climbed since late February when oil spiked to around US$100 a barrel after Russia invaded Ukraine, and there’s no sign of those crude prices coming back down any time soon. As of midday Friday, the benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price was hovering at over US$112 a barrel.

The most expensive gas in Canada on Friday was recorded in Newfoundland, which averaged at a whopping $2.23 for a litre of regular.

The average price of fuel in Canada around this time last year, was around $1.29.
