As a part of the Alberta government’s massive inflation relief plans, it’s allocating funds to the province’s food banks.
The province is giving $10 million to food banks across Alberta over the next two years.
The government says the first $5 million will arrive in the coming weeks, while a further $5 million will come in the 2022-23 fiscal year.
Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jeremy Nixon was joined by Minister of Affordability and Utilities Matt Jones at the Calgary Food Bank for the announcement.
“Many Albertans rely on food banks, which is why I am so grateful for the work they do in their local communities,” Nixon said. “Alberta’s government is proud to work with these organizations as we help care for those in need. By ensuring food banks within our province have enough resources, they will be able to support the communities and families they serve. It is my goal to ensure that no Albertan ever needs to wonder where their next meal will come from. I am grateful that our government is able to work with food banks to care for those who rely on their services.”
The government also says it’s giving an additional $10 million over two years to charities, not-for-profits, and civil society organizations for a total of $20 million in funding support.
Arianna Scott, CEO of Food Banks Alberta, Michael Pasma, president of the Calgary Food Bank, and Murtaza Jamaly, president of Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta were also at the Calgary Food Bank for the announcement.
“We all need to work together to find solutions to the root causes of food insecurity. As we approach a future of potential economic instability, we are honoured to have the Alberta government’s commitment,” Pasma said.
