Alcohol and speed factors in summer NE Calgary fatal collision

A Calgary man is facing charges connected to a collision that killed a woman over the summer in the city’s northeast.

It happened on July 28 at around 2 a.m. on 4 Street NE between two entrances to Huntstrom Drive in the community of Huntington Hills.

Police say a man and a woman were skateboarding in the area when the woman was hit by a driver in his 20s in an Infiniti M35X travelling southbound.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was not injured.

Officers say the car briefly left the roadway, turning to face backward and stopping beside the road.

The driver then drove back onto the roadway, pulled into a nearby street, and stopped.

A passenger was also in the car, and both of them were uninjured. Police say the driver remained on the scene.

Investigators say alcohol and excessive speed were factors.

As a result, 23-year-old Calgary man, James O’Bray, has been charged with the operation of a vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration over 80 milligrams causing death.

He will appear in court on Feb. 13.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
