Calgary Inglewood car free for one day

Calgarians have an opportunity to stretch their legs as they explore Inglewood with a Car-Free Sunday on Sept. 17.

The community’s business improvement area (BIA) says it is meant for residents and visitors alike to “stroll and roll” through the area while supporting local businesses.

As a result, 9 Avenue from 11 Street and 14 Street SE will be closed to all vehicles from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Businesses will have the opportunity to extend their storefronts to the sidewalk, providing visitors with a chance to enjoy Calgary’s original main street without the usual hustle and bustle of cars and trucks,” a notice from the Inglewood BIA reads.

Inglewood has more than 250 businesses.

On top of the chance to explore the shops on the “main vein,” the BIA says there will be musical performances from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

To help with parking in the area, the BIA partnered with the City of Calgary to designate alternate parking areas for those visiting.

Inglewood had Car Free Sundays throughout August in 2021 and 2022 but could not do the same in 2023 due to a lack of funding. It has been relegated to a single day in September.

Car-Free Sunday is meant as a homage to a time when foot traffic was the only type of traffic in the neighbourhood.
