Calgary police are on the lookout for a man involved in a hate-motivated assault in Southwood in the city’s southwest Friday.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when officers say a woman was crossing the parking lot at the Southwood Centre along Elbow Drive when someone in a parked vehicle honked at her.
Then, a man got out of the vehicle and rushed toward the woman aggressively gesturing and making “punching motions” in front of her face while threatening to kill her because of her religion.
Investigators say the woman was able to escape to her vehicle and leave the area.
The suspect is described as being around 60 years old, with a heavy build and a bald head, and was wearing a checkered blue shirt, black pants, black shoes, and brown sunglasses at the time.
“There is no place for hate in our city,” the Calgary Police Service said in a statement. “Hate-motivated crimes are recognizable crimes, like assault, theft, vandalism or any other crime, where the offender was motivated by bias, prejudice or hate that is based on one of nine personal characteristics of the victim.”
Police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 403-266-1234 or leave a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
