Section of Calgary Transit Red Line shut down for maintenance and repairs

Calgary Transit says its Red Line will be closed between Lions Park Station and downtown until the very early hours of Monday.

Stations affected include 7 Street, 8 Street, Sunnyside, and SAIT/AUArts/Jubilee.

Calgary Transit says shuttle buses will replace northbound train service to all stations from 7 Street Station to Lions Park Station and southbound to all stations from Lions Park Station to 8 Street Station.

“If you’re heading southbound, you will get off the shuttle and catch the Red Line train towards Somerset-Bridlewood at 8 Street Station,” a notice on the Calgary Transit website reads.

Reasons include maintenance and repair projects, including safety enhancements and pedestrian gate upgrades at the Sunnyside Station, and “other projects, as time allows.”

“We know these closures can have an impact on your travel, which is why we try to keep them as minimally disruptive as possible,” the notice reads.

Calgary Transit says some work can be completed while keeping the trains on track, but “certain projects” are too big, or they can’t share the space safely while trains continue to operate. As such, fully closing off sections of the line is required.

“Occasionally, a power cut is required to carry out specific work, which also means we need to close the line to train travel,” the notice reads.

“You may notice sometimes the closure affects more stations than just the section where work is being done, but that’s generally due to the track layout and giving trains the space they need to maneuver as they switch direction.”
