Chinook Blast — Calgary’s relatively new winter festival — will be returning next month.
The fourth annual festival will run from Feb. 2 through Feb. 19, with Olympic Plaza being the hub for more than 200 experiences which range from arts and culture, to sports and even business-type activites.
The festival covers three weekends, and Mayor Jyoti Gondek highlighted some of the events happening each weekend.
“Kicking off the first weekend, is Calgary’s biggest hack-a-thon, YYC Hacks, located at Bow Valley College, hackers of all coding abilities will be working to solve the problem statement: How can we use tech to make Calgary more accessible to visitors and newcomers?” she said.
Coinciding with the Lunar New Year on the second weekend, the Asian Heritage Foundation and it’s community partners are hosting the Imagine Asian Night Market, the mayor said, adding there is a dragon dance and lantern parade on the evening of Feb. 9.
The Four Winds Indigenous Showcase and Market, the Asian Heritage Foundation, and Market Collective, will all be returning to the City Hall Atrium as well.
“What I love about going to these markets, is it’s a great way to support our local artists and vendors,” Gondek said.
Last year, Chinook Blast generated about $13.5 million in economic activity for the city, with more than 370,000 people attending events.
