Calgary’s new professional women’s soccer team will be called Wild FC and have an owl as its mascot, the team announced Thursday.
The team will play in the Northern Super League alongside Ottawa, Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax.
The team says it logo and crest channel the owl, “a bird that is as silent as a whisper; an all-seeing huntress, patiently waiting for the chance to strike.”
The colours of neon violet and red are representative of Calgary, reflecting its “incredible sunsets and the iconic red of the Calgary Tower,” it adds.
The team’s crest also has a stylized ‘W’ on it, a nod to the name but also Alberta’s mountains and rivers. The five points making up the ‘W’ are also a nod to Alberta’s Famous Five and the five nations of Treaty 7.
Wild FC’s tagline, ‘She shoots, she soars,’ aims to inspire the next generation of girls to understand the sky is the limit to their soccer aspirations, the team says.
It adds that the team and organization are committed to providing a new professional pathway for Canadian women to play a high level of soccer at home.
McMahon Stadium will be the home of the club.

Project 8, the foundation for the new Canadian professional women’s soccer league, was founded by Diana Matheson and Thomas Gilbert.
Matheson is a former member of the Canada national team and an Olympic Bronze medalist.
Until the creation of Project 8, Canada was the only top 10 FIFA-ranked nation that didn’t have a women’s professional soccer league.
Northern Super League play is set to kick off in the spring of 2025.
