Calgary police say speed was a factor in a crash on southeast Deerfoot Trail and the Seton Boulevard interchange that sent two people to hospital Sunday.
It happened at around 1:30 p.m. when a 2010 Cobra driven by a man in his 50s was heading southbound on Deerfoot Trail.
Officers say that as he was approaching the Seton Boulevard overpass, he drove onto the right-hand shoulder of the roadway as the lanes reduced.
Then, the vehicle struck a road construction sign before rotating and hitting a cable separating traffic from the Seton Boulevard SE ramp.
Police say he was driving on the grassy median when he was then ejected from the vehicle, sustaining life-threatening injuries. The vehicle continued, striking a concrete wall before stopping.
A passenger in his 30s suffered serious injuries, and along with the driver, was rushed to hospital.
While impairment is not a factor in the crash, investigators say excessive speed is being considered.
