Calgary police have identified the victim of the city’s 14th homicide of the year and are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect still at large.
Emergency crews responded to reports of gunshots around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday in the area of 69 Avenue SE and 20 Street SE. Officers arrived to find a man dead outside his vehicle.
An autopsy conducted Thursday identified the victim as 32-year-old Feysal Osman Abdul-Aziz.
Abdul-Aziz was previously charged with second-degree murder in the killing of a man outside a southeast Calgary hookah lounge in 2020. He was later acquitted.
About an hour after this week’s shooting, members of the Tsuut’ina Nation Police Service spotted a blue Nissan Sentra driving aggressively near the Elbow River bridge onto Weaselhead Road.
The driver fled from a traffic stop, and the vehicle eventually came to a halt near Buffalo Run Boulevard. Four men ran from the car.
Three suspects were taken into custody with the help of Calgary police — one near Buffalo Run Boulevard and two later in the Palliser community. A fourth man remains at large and is believed to have fled into the Woodbine area, possibly accessing Oakridge, Cedarbrae, or Palliser.
Police describe him as having a dark complexion and wearing dark clothing and shoes. Investigators believe he may have approached members of the public seeking help or a ride.
“We don’t have the entire information of where he was,” says Calgary police Acting Insp. Darren Smith. “We believe he would be attempting to get a ride from someone in the public, or someone else.”
One of the men arrested has since been released. Two others remain in custody on unrelated warrants.
None of the individuals are residents of the Tsuut’ina Nation.
A burned-out vehicle was discovered west of Weaselhead Road on Tsuut’ina Nation land. Investigators are working to determine whether it is connected to the shooting.
Smith says the incident appears to be targeted and linked to organized crime.
“While homicides have decreased compared to previous years, we fully understand the deep impact violence has on the community, even if there is no current or active risk to the public at this time,” Smith said in a statement.
Police are urging anyone with information, dashcam footage, or who may have been approached by the outstanding suspect to contact the police or Crime Stoppers.
