Grizzly bear found shot in Southern Alberta; investigation underway

Some disturbing news from west of Claresholm, where Fish and Wildlife officers are investigating the death of a Grizzly Bear.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement officials are investigating the death of a grizzly bear found shot in Southern Alberta.

The bear carcass was discovered last fall northeast of Honey Coulee in the Porcupine Hills east of Claresholm.

Officers believe the bear was killed sometime between Nov. 8 and Nov. 20. The animal was left abandoned at the site, and investigators say the circumstances strongly suggest it was illegally shot.

Alberta’s recreational grizzly bear hunting season was officially closed in 2006 due to concerns over declining populations. As a result, hunting grizzlies is an offence under the Wildlife Act.

Officials are renewing their call for information.

Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area, or who has details about the incident, is urged to contact the provincial Report‑A‑Poacher line.
