A recount of ballots cast in Calgary’s Ward 12 will begin Thursday morning after the runner-up requested one.
Unofficial results have a 29-vote difference between councillor-elect Mike Jamieson with A Better Calgary Party and The Calgary Party’s Sarah Ferguson.
Elections Calgary says after taking a look at the official results, there were sufficient rejected ballots over ones where no votes were cast.
The recount will take place at The Big Four Roadhouse.
Following the recount, the Ward 12 councillor ballot count will be revised if necessary. Any changes will be announced by returning officer Kate Martin.
Similar request denied in Ward 9
Another request was also submitted Wednesday to recount the votes cast in Ward 9.
In that ward, Harrison Clark unofficially won the seat with a 267-vote lead over Gar Gar.
However, the returning officer determined there were insufficient grounds for a recount and denied the ask.
Recount also requested in mayor’s race
Mayoral runner-up Sonya Sharp with the Communities First party has also asked for ballots to be recounted.
She lost to Jeromy Farkas by just 585 votes in Monday’s vote.
Elections Calgary says the candidate with the second-highest number of votes may request a recount if the difference between them and the first candidate is within 0.5 per cent of the total ballots at a voting station. Sharp cites the margin of 585 votes as just 0.16 per cent
Her request can’t be addressed until results become official at noon on Friday.
