Family upset they won’t hear testimony from Varley killer

The family of a man killed in custody by an RCMP member ten years ago is upset the officer won’t be called to testify at a fatality inquiry.

The second part of the inquest into Darren Varley’s death at a Pincher Creek jail will reconvene Monday.

The judge ruled that Constable Mike Ferguson does not have to tesify due to medical reasons.

The family tells the Calgary Herald they will have questions for Ferguson’s best friend and the staff seargeant at the Pincher Creek prison during the killing, but they’re angry they won’t be hearing from Ferguson himself.

The constable was convicted of manslaughter in 2004 after shooting Varley twice, once in the stomach and once in the head.

He is now out on full parole.
