CALGARY (660 NEWS) – As the City of Calgary prepares to break ground on a new bridge into Inglewood, crews will first be removing trees near the old 9 Avenue bridge.
The trees need to be uprooted to make room for construction, but will eventually be replaced.
“Elm, spruce, poplar, and they are in a variety of conditions,” explained the City of Calgary’s Evan Fer of the 50 trees coming down. “Some are young and old, others are healthy, and some are suffering from European Elm Scale. So there’s a variety of trees that we are removing.”
The City plans on building a temporary bridge later this spring and then will starting construction on a new bridge this fall.

According to the City of Calgary’s website, the goal is to make sure the ecological health of the area around the bridge and river is restored. It may mean planting more trees and increasing the types of trees. Sometimes it may mean planting other types of vegetation that can better integrate with the native species and the Elbow River bank.
The re-planting of the trees will happen in the fall 2020 and spring 2021.
