Man who pleaded guilty in 2019 attack on ex-girlfriend appealing conviction

CALGARY – The man who pleaded guilty aggravated assault, arson, and other charges in relation to a violent attack on his ex-girlfriend in 2019 is appealing his conviction.

On June 9, Dawn Warden was rushed to hospital after she was attacked with a sword, trapped in a closet, and her house set on fire.

She suffered life-altering injuries.

“All my fingers were pretty much cut off, except for my thumb. I lost three, they saved seven. My shoulder was cut from the back to the end, twice, I think, in a ‘v’ shape. There are two marks there. It was cut to the bone,” she described in a previous interview with 660 NEWS.

“My ear was cut off to the back of my neck… I had three gashes on my stomach and one on my right thigh.”

She spent eight hours in emergency surgery so doctors could reattach some of her fingers and her ear. Doctors used stitches in her hands and ears and 150 staples to close up her horrific wounds.

Collin Ayorech pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, arson, and other charges last December and was sentenced to eight years in prison at the beginning of August.

Ayorech is now appealing his conviction, although there are no grounds for appeal listed in the court document.

If he is unsuccessful in appealing his conviction, he’s seeking permission to appeal his sentence.
