CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A worker was hospitalized after falling through the ice while operating a vehicle on a lake in southeast Calgary Saturday morning.
Fire crews were called to a lake in the community of Midnapore around 8:45 a.m. after a person fell through the ice while performing ice-clearing duties.
In a statement, the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) say the vehicle broke through the ice and became submerged in approximately 10 metres of water.
A co-worker was able to help the person to safety from the hole in the ice before crews arrived.
The CFD say they assessed the worker on scene before Alberta Health Services (AHS) transported them to hospital.
The lake is currently closed pending investigation.
“When rivers, community lakes, storm ponds, or waterways start to freeze, the ice around and covering these bodies of water, can be dangerous,” city officials said in a statement.
“Stay safe by staying off the ice near waterways unless it is a City or community-designated ice rink.”
