A two-year-old girl is dead and one man was taken into custody in Calgary’s southeast community of Midnapore Thursday morning.
Police say it happened at a townhouse complex on Bannister Manor SE just after 2 a.m.
Emergency crews were called to the home for reports of a toddler in medical distress. The child was taken to hospital by EMS, however, “life-saving attempts were unsuccessful” and the girl was pronounced dead.
One man was taken into custody on suspicion of homicide, however, no charges have been laid.
“As it is still early in the investigation, detectives are interviewing a number of individuals to determine the events leading up to the child’s death,” police said in a release.
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, and police say no further information is available at this time.
People who live in the area say they are in shock after learning about the child’s death.
One neighbour who lives in the area told CityNews she was woken up around 2 a.m. by what sounded like a car crash.
“I heard ‘are you OK? Do you need help? Call 911,'” she said. “So I came flying out of my house.”
The neighbour says when she went outside to see what was happening, she saw another neighbour performing CPR on a child.
“It’s upsetting, I have a five-year-old of my own, and so it hits close to home for me, it’s really sad and tragic,” she said.
There is no word from police on what relationship the man may have had with the child, however the neighbour says she doesn’t believe he lived at the home.
A second neighbour told CityNews she was woken up by the sound of two people arguing around 2:30 a.m.
“I heard my neighbour screaming outside, she was screaming really frantically at her boyfriend,” she said.
“She was just frantically panicking like ‘she’s not breathing, she’s not breathing, why hasn’t anybody come yet?'”
She says she saw several emergency vehicles arrive at the house, and EMS took the girl out on a stretcher.
Details about what led to the incident unclear, and police have not confirmed the circumstances of the girl’s death.
