Calgary councillor faces sanctions after golfing during video city council meeting

A Calgary city councillor is facing sanctions.

Sanctions were laid on Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean by the city’s integrity commissioner following an inquiry into this involvement in a golf tournament while participating in a city council video meeting.

The initial complaint arose after the July 26 council session, during which McLean’s Microsoft Teams video briefly displayed two individuals in a golf cart.

Upon investigation, McLean confirmed to the integrity commissioner that he had participated in the Shane Homes Golf Tournament at the Heritage Pointe Golf Course.

Despite acknowledging his involvement, McLean defended his attendance, emphasizing the significance of the event due to the presence of business leaders from his ward.

He pointed out that other city councillors were also present at the same golf tournament, although he couldn’t identify them.

During the council meeting, McLean missed a vote, attributing it to technical difficulties and poor reception.

The investigation concluded with McLean being found guilty of violating the Calgary Council Code of Conduct.

As part of his disciplinary action, McLean is required to draft a letter within the next 30 days, accepting responsibility for his decision and offering an apology to city administration and council.
