Alberta Health Services (AHS) has ordered the closure of a restaurant in Calgary’s Chinatown due to a “significant” cockroach infestation.
The notice of closure issued on Jan. 17 says Ho Won Restaurant on 2 Avenue SE has a german cockroach infestation and comes after six inspections at the restaurant between February 2022 and January 2025 during which inspectors observed several violations.
The violations listed in the closure notice include cockroaches on glue boards, walls and equipment, as well as droppings and egg cases throughout the facility.
AHS says inspectors noticed a gap along the bottom of a back exterior door and say there was no pest monitoring program in place at the restaurant.
In addition to the cockroach infestation, a number of other violations were detected, including heavily soiled reusable cleaning cloths seen directly on food contact surfaces, foods being stored uncovered directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler, and multiple floor and ceiling tiles broken, or with debris and water damage.
AHS has outlined extensive cleanup, sanitation and repair requirements, and stated that an integrated pest management plan, potentially involving exterminator, must be completed before the restaurant can reopen.
